FAQ

This section addresses the most common questions residents have regarding Windsor Mews.

When are trash and recycling collected?

Your trash will be collected two times per week on Mondays and Thursdays and recycling will be picked up one time per week on Thursdays. It's impossible to guarantee an exact time because the amount of trash varies each day.

Trash and recycling are picked up on all holidays except New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day, or on days on which disposal facilities are closed. If your service day falls on any of these occasions, your next pickup will be on your next scheduled service day. Christmas trees will be collected the first two weeks in January.

Trash should be placed in covered cans or in heavy duty trash bags, secured tightly, and placed at the curb in front of your home. Broken glass or tin can lids should be wrapped in paper bags. Ashes remain hot for several days; please store them in a metal container, out of the house, for about a week prior to putting them out for pickup. Hedge and tree trimmings must be less than 4 inches in diameter, cut into 4-foot lengths and tied in small bundles or bagged.

Recycling can be placed in any recycling container or in clear plastic bags.  Recycling containers can be purchased from American Disposal Services (Contact Information).  The $10 cost can be paid by check or it can be paid by Visa or MasterCard for an additional $5 fee.  American delivers recycling containers every few weeks on a separate schedule than pickups.

The following items will NOT be collected: dead animals, oil, pain, stains, batteries, construction or remodeling material, manure, tree stumps, mulch, sod, dirt, stone, rocks, cement, bricks, poisons, dangerous acids, caustics, explosives or other dangerous material or items too large or heavy to be loaded in collection vehicles safely.

My lamp post is broken, where do I go to get a replacement?

If you need to replace the entire light fixture because it is not working or is broken, (the old, original fixtures cannot be repaired), the Board has chosen HINKLEY’s Manor House collection, in Black, Medium Size, and Cast Aluminum with clear beveled glass panels. The exterior wall fixture is No. 1449BK and the post fixture is No. 1441BK. Residents are to use only one 75-watt clear light bulb in the regular one-light-bulb base in each fixture. You may use a compact fluorescent bulb in place of an incandescent bulb.

You may purchase the HINKLEY light fixtures from any lighting store that carries the HINKLEY brand. But if you want to avail yourself of a discounted price that the Board has negotiated for Windsor Mews residents, you will have to contact Terence at REXEL’s Springfield showroom (5255 Port Royal Road, phone 703-321-7100), just off the Beltway on Braddock Road (opposite Kilroy’s Restaurant and Safeway). The special discounted price for the fixtures at REXEL is $222.52 for the exterior wall unit and $189.80 for the post unit.  Prices subject to change without prior notice.

Why is my lamp not working?

First try replacing the bulbs with two 7-watt compact fluorescent bulbs @ $ 6.00 each. If that does not work check to see if you have a circuit interrupt in your master bath (next to your vanity, it is the outlet with the buttons in the middle). Try resetting the outlets in your home by pushing in on the test and then on the reset button. If neither works, you may need to have an electrician check the photocell located next to your garage; this is what activates your light when it gets dark.

What are the colors for my siding/trim/garage door/shutters/front door/roof shingles?

Colors are determined by the model Unit A (Aston), B (Barton),C (Dalton) and D (Charleston) as well as address.

Winterizing Your Home

It's time to think about winterizing your house, no matter whether you'll be there all winter or plan to be away for an extended period. The tasks aren't overwhelming when you prepare for winter one step at a time, and if you plan to be home, you'll be glad you did, because the steps you take will protect your property and save you dollars in heating costs.

Seal Leaks around Doors and Windows

  • Add or replace worn weather-stripping around doors and windows.

  • Replace worn door stops at the bottom of doors (especially the garage door).

  • If you have them, install storm doors and windows.

  • Install insulating kits behind electrical plugs that are on a wall with an exterior side.

Is the Insulation Adequate?

Proper attic insulation keeps your home warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Ask the staff at your local home improvement center how much insulation is recommended in your area, then check your attic insulation to make sure it's adequate. Some homes benefit from additional wall insulation. Home improvement center staff will explain types of insulation that can be added to existing walls.

Heating System Checks

  • Have a heating professional do a routine-check before cold weather arrives.

  • Vacuum the vents and other heating components.

  • If it has one, replace the furnace filter.

  • Consider installing a setback thermostat. It regulates the temperature, allowing the home to be cooler when you are away or asleep.

  • Check your gas Fireplace

Check the Roof & Its Neighbors

  • Replace loose shingles.

  • Make sure the flashing around the vent pipes is watertight.

  • Check the bricks and mortar.

  • Clean drain gutters and point downspouts away from the house.

  • Trim tree limbs that are hanging over or touching the roof.

Winterize the Plumbing

  • Take care of known issues with pipes that freeze. Heat tape can be used to keep them warm during extremely cold weather.

  • Learn how to turn off water at its source so that you can stop leaks immediately if they start.

  • Drain water from outdoor faucets when you think a hard freeze is coming.

Winterizing Outdoor Items

  • Give decks an additional coat of sealer.

  • Check the foundation and siding for cracks or gaps. Repair as necessary.

  • Drain garden hoses, roll them up, and store them inside.

  • Prune shrubbery and add mulch to perennial flower beds.

  • Cover outdoor furniture or store it inside.

That's a start! There may be additional winterizing duties that are important for your area. If you're new to town, ask your neighbors how they prepare for winter.
